We listened to the audiobook for our audio read-aloud. The children thought it was fun listening to the summer adventures of the cousins and I think Elizabeth Enright is a pretty good writer.

This was a nice story. Peaceful, but adventurous, just as summer should be. It was written as a contemporary story with a great deal about the past, however, and the contemporary of the book is longer ago now than the past was to the book at the time it was written, so the layers of time might be confusing for some readers.

I love Enright's writing and her characters. While they have faults, they are good kids that make good choices and treat each other with respect.

A sweet little story, more for voracious readers than relunctant ones, since there's not a ton of action. Two young cousins happen upon an old lakeside community in disrepair ever since the lake dried up and became a swamp. They meet a pair of pleasant hermit-ish siblings who grew up there and came back to raise chickens, garden, and escape city life. Reminded me of Anne of Green Gables or Caddie Woodlawn in tone. Makes me wish for simpler times! Grade 3-6, or for adults who want a sweet, old-fashioned sort of read.

Oh my gosh I forgot how wonderful this book is! I am so excited because as I was finishing up the last few pages, my husband told me that I had received a package today and yipppee skippee Return to Gone Away was in it!!! So, I'm off to read that one now too. :)[bc:Return to Gone-Away|547853|Return to Gone-Away (Gone-Away Lake Books)|Elizabeth Enright|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1175707449s/547853.jpg|535112]

A wholesome classic children's book without too many twists and turns (or a whole lot of excitement, truthfully) but with charm to spare. I flew through this one--partially because it's a children's book and partially because it's an easy read that doesn't require too much thought. Not particularly dying to read the second one, but I'll probably pick it up soon to finish off the duology.

Fun summertime adventure of two cousins who come upon an "abandoned" once-lake-town. No huge climax, but a simple, nice story with kind and interesting people who share a summer together.

What a delightful slice of life book. It felt the way summer was supposed to and was an enjoyable way to pass some of the hot summer hours here.
