Spoilers ahead:

This is a precursor to Bernie. The burglar isn't named but isn't and can't be Bernie. I like it because this short is quick and dirty, completely unformulaic like the Bernie books.

Really don't read this part if you don't want it spoiled.
Burglar is caught in the act burglarizing a home. The homeowner holds the burglar with a gun. However, instead of calling the police, the owner asks the burglar to play chess with him. Having no choice, the burglar agrees. All is well until the owner's wife comes home. The owner quickly kills his wife, by slamming the burglar's pry bar on her head a few times.

The burglar is shocked and blurts out "why did you kill her". The owner calmly says "no, you did" and shoots the burglar dead.

It's a neat and quick story and no doubt set the stage for the Bernie series. Of course it isn't Bernie because the owner shoots him dead.
