I could not find the actual goodreads listing for ‘A New England Nun’ so this will have to do. It’s a beautifully written short story by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman who throughout her work showcases female portrayals that deviated from traditional heroins of her time. I definitely enjoyed the story and it left me wondering as its ending is not necessarily a happy one - it really depends on where you are in your life and the societal and cultural expectations for women you grew up in.

This story delicately crushes stereotypes about women waiting for marriage and I am so here for it.

“Louisa, all alone by herself that night, wept a little, she hardly knew why; but the next morning, on waking, she felt like a queen who, after fearing lest her domain be wrested away from her, sees it firmly insured in her possession.”
