Nesbo on a bad day is probably a better thriller writer than 90% of the rest at their best, and though I wouldn't call it a bad day for him, this one was probably my least favorite of the Harry Hole books I've read. It's taut, but raw. There are a few too many characters and too many gratuitous red herrings. But at the end of the day, it's still Harry Hole doing what he does best -- fighting off the cold winter of the soul and making bad guys pay.

The Snowman is the 7th book in the Norwegian mystery series featuring police inspector Harry Hole by Jo Nesbø. I've previously enjoyed 3 other books in this entertaining series. I've had Snowman on my shelves the longest of the other couple books I currenlty own and still have to read. Snowman was also turned into a movie in 2017, with Michael Fassbender playing Harry Hole.
So enough preamble. The story starts in November 1980 when a woman goes to meet a lover in a vacant house. In the back seat she has left her young son. When they depart the home, the boy says, "I saw him." And adds, 'The Snowman."
The story jumps to the present and Harry Hole will soon be investigating the disappearance of a woman from their relatively isolated home. Another woman will also have disappeared, leaving her son alone. Into Hole's team comes a young woman cop from Bergen, Katrine Bratt. She's mysterious (and played by Rebecca Ferguson in the movie, if you're interested)
As the team begins to investigate, they realize that over the past years a number of women have gone missing. Harry has also received an anonymous letter from someone called The Snowman. Oh and Harry's apartment is being torn apart by some guy who showed up saying he's investigating mould. Yup.
It's an investigation that goes back many years, leading Harry and Katrine back to Bergen where they discover the body of an ex cop, suspected of murdering women in the past. There turn out to be many suspects; a flashy newspaper owner who seems to have been fathering children everywhere, including the children of the two most recent missing women; a couple of doctors, involved in exploring blood links between children, mothers and their 'fathers'. And who is Rakel's new boyfriend (Rakel is Harry's ex, but they continue to meet clandestinely for sexual evenings).
Harry is troubled, as always. He's an alcoholic, trying to stop and the pressure makes it even more difficult. The case keeps turning this way and that and they keep finding more bodies, especially of their suspects! It's all very interesting and comes to a thrilling, tense conclusion. I like how the story starts with one small incident and then at the end, concludes from that incident going through all the follow-on events. Neat way of resolving a mystery / thriller. All in all, even though I did keep putting the story aside at the beginning, it was another entertaining Harry Hole mystery. Harry is always good value for money. (3.5 stars)

Третья книга, которую я прочитала у Несбё, и она мне очень нравится! Этот человек меня все больше удивляет. У него не раздражает да же то, что нам не всегда понятно, что он там по телефону услышал, но автор и не сильно задерживает информацию, так что раздражаться не на что.
А как он крутит читателем подкидывая одного подозреваемого за другим! Догадаться кто все же убийца может быть и можно, но в какой-то момент ты просто забываешь, что есть такая возможность, автор цапает тебя в свои силки и ты вслед за героем бьешься о версии и не чувствуешь от них удовлетворения. И при этом надо заметить, что автор тебе не лжет и ничего не скрывает, он между прочим все сказал в самом начале! Это ты все проворонил увлекаемый течением из людей, снега и снеговиков.
И, кстати, тут есть атмосфера! В несколько строчек автор дает тебе ощутить зиму, первый снег. Или же конец ноября, надоевший дождь. Мы убегаем вместе с героиней по сугробам и прыгаем в холодный ручей. Несколько строк, а над нами уже темнеющее небо и страшный в сумерках лес. Несколько строк решают очень многое. Вот поэтому такой детектив цепляет, не только тем что автор крутит вертит и очень логично все объясняет и герои у него думают как люди с мозгом, обыкновенные люди с мозгом, а еще и тем, что ты ощущаешь темноту, страх, видишь этих снеговиков, которые на тебя пялятся, тебе глаз от строчек порой отвести страшно. Несбё иногда выступает как бабайка из-под кровати:) Вот поэтому я люблю такие книги и меня откровенно разочаровывают подобные "Изящное искусство смерти", потому что там все есть, чтобы привлечь, но автору просто не до этого, он не думает о читателе, он думает как сделать приятное себе.
Рассказывать краткое содержание детектива, только портить себе карму. Но могу сказать, что главный герой не супермен, он обыкновенный человек, мало того, он еще и алкоголик. Страшная смесь. Но он борется со своей зависимостью. Это герою в плюс. Он бабник. То есть он любит одну женщину, но так как мужик здоровый, то на женщин внимание обращает. У него нет родного ребенка, но он трепетно относится к своему приемному сыну. Я не знаю что там у них происходило до "Снеговика", книга-то не первая, но по факту - он вырастил не овцу! Для меня это значимый факт. Нельзя сказать, что герой хорош, но при всех своих недостатках, он не выглядит жалостливым уродом. Просто есть авторы, которые пишут про полицейских, которые то на голову больны, то пьют как дышат и вот они выглядят отвратительно, про них читать-то невозможно ибо они и полицейские так себе, да и как люди сплошь говно. Тут человек рвется, старается, за это вот прям плюс автору, он создал обычного человека, который хочет быть лучше, и, который действительно работает. А не все к нему на башку само собой из-за угла сыпется.
Кстати, тут как таковой мерзоты и кровищи нет в тончайших подробностях, но скажу вам, Несбё умеет создать атмосферу того, что вас подергает на местах преступлений и без этих подробностей.
Автор мне с каждой прочитанной его книгой нравится все больше и больше. Читать! Его однозначно надо читать!

This was a book club read and not my usual genre. Well written with lots of twists and turns. I felt that the large cast of characters as well as bringing in characters and information from previous books in the series made it a tad confusing at times. As the book went on it became a bit far fetched. It might have worked better if it had been trimmed down a bit. "Harry Hole" (what a name?) is very popular, so I think I am in the minority not loving this series. I had quite a few upsetting dreams whilst reading this book, so I am obviously not cut out for reading crime fiction
