A group of tourists go to Africa for a safari. They are all lost except for one woman. She managed to survive by traveling on foot for two weeks until she reached a camping lodge. Her story is that the person responsible for their protection turned on them.

In Boston, six years later, a man who's son was on that safari is killed. At first it doesn't look like there is a connection. Then a strange and horrific pattern begins to emerge. Maybe they are related. Rizzoli and Isles pursue the case and hope for a resolution before more people are killed.

Love this series. It isn't much like the TV series but has enough similarities to appeal to fans of the show. Ms Gerritsen is a terrific writer and this series is well crafted with great characters. Highly recommended to all mystery/thriller fans.

Detective Jane Rizzoli & Medical Examiner Maura Isles are investigating the gruesome murder of a big game hunter and taxidermist who died in a similar manner to how he captured his own big cats. Maura eventually finds a connection to an unsolved case in the wilds of Botswana where six members of a safari either were presumed dead or whose bodies were later found. There was one survivor and the suspected murderer has never been seen again. That survivor has taken great pains to stay hidden all these years.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this story and is a case of “it’s not you, it’s me.” The subject matter was not something that interests me and a great deal of the story takes place during that safari. I’m sure it was fascinating but I just wanted to get back to Boston. Once the story did do just that, it regained my attention.

Tanya Eby repeats as the narrator and did a great job managing a very diverse cast of characters. I liked the continuity. It’s a good story, just not a great one for me. 3.5 stars

I have listened to many of the books in this series. This was fine. Not my favorite, not my least favorite. 2.5 stars.

If this was a stand-alone mystery novel, I likely would have rated this two stars, but it gets rounded up because I am familiar with the main characters, even though they were really not the focus in this book.

5 Stars!

I've always loved Tess's work. This is no exception. I usually give her 4's. However Tess seemed to creatively heighten mystery towards about 80% until the end. The book was in no way resolved at that point, yet she still managed to throw the suspense ball around quite a few times (and credibly), until the end. She strategically uses time and pace to both draw you in the story and build suspense. Also, the dual stories of Africa and Boston were good for mood. 5 Stars to Gerritsen!

Another terrific book in this series!

Very entertaining. Hard to put down. Alternates between a third-person account of Rizzoli and Isles investigating a bizarre murder of a taxidermist in Boston and a first-person account by a British woman named Millie who goes with her then boyfriend on an excursion into the Bush in Botswana, which goes very, very wrong.
