As a white person I will never fully understand, but this book gives a major look inside the life of a black person. This book is heartbreaking, as it should be. I just don’t even know what to write about it, it probably doesn’t do this book justice. Just.. wow.

Incredible

This book was just utterly sensational - it’s the type of book that you need to force on a young adult so that they can understand racism, poverty, gangs and violence, abuse, drugs, and also about activism. I think that I was almost crying around the 100 page mark and it persisted throughout the book. It is an incredibly emotional story for many reasons and the writing is just phenomenal. This is also one of those young adult novels that absolutely should be read by adults as well as it’s such a powerful book, particularly in light of the Black Lives Matter movement and the frequent images of police brutality in the news headlines.

The main character is also very well written - and I really enjoyed reading about the dual lives that she led between her home life in a poor community overrun with various gangs and frequent shootings, and the rich white school that she attends over an hour away. But the book did well to deal with the pain and fear that she experienced in speaking out against the police who shot her friend, and how this affected her family and the community.

Incredible book, and an absolute must read for adults and young adults alike.

Extraordinary reading experience. Incredibly well written on multiple levels. I feel I need to say I am Caucasian and I can see where this could be a difficult read--it was for me in certain places. I think the places I struggled with it were (1) where I was surprised (and disappointed) to see some of myself; and (2) where I was presented with an alternate perspective particularly toward recent local events. I felt like the author presented multiple viewpoints while clearly using her voice--through the character of Starr--to weave a story based in the real, complicated and often unheard voices that are so often ignored or silenced. The Hate U Give is a story with the ability to be life-changing as a reading experience. It was for me.

In our current climate where racial tensions abound, this novel should be required reading for everyone. Starr Carter, the book's protagonist, witnesses the police shooting of her friend Khalil, and then must deal with everything the aftermath entails, including her own grief, the smearing of Khalil's name to justify the shooting, and various parties not wanting Starr to speak out about what happened. Thomas writes natural, raw dialougue and doesn't gloss over any of Starr's struggles from the danger in her own community to family drama to fear of the police to facing racism at her mostly white school. A powerful story about a young woman finding her voice.

Every single person on the planet should read this book. It's that important.
