Next to the fact that this book screams millennial energy (which is of course not bad, it’s just not for everyone), this book embarrassed the shit out of me. I found Caleb really annoying, but most of all really entitled.
I can’t believe this guy is traumatised by a woman who had an abortion? How dare he compare the loss of his brother to an abortion, a loss of a foetus? And calling it “killing a baby”. The nerve he has to call that woman selfish because she didn’t want to have kids NOW and wanted to hire a nanny?
lmao I don’t know anything about the author but she could read a book about feminism or two.

I thought, during the first 100 pages of this novel, that I had found another holy grail romance book that could compare to my favorites It Happened One Summer and How to Fail at Flirting. But, it was not meant to be. I did end up really enjoying this book, though it definitely wasn't perfect.

To start, there was no POV from the love interest. Which isn't always a huge determent in reading these books, but in this case I feel it was a mistake to leave that out. A huge chunk of the plot is the reader and Ava figuring out why Caleb has a resentment towards long term relationships. And when the truth is finally revealed, we don't get to understand how Caleb was able to go from a casual situationship only to Ava being the love of his life. I felt that resolution would've been far more impactful if we got to read from Caleb's point of view how he managed to give love another try.

Another annoying thing that bothered me was the inconsistency of the spice. The tension and chemistry between Ava and Caleb was soooo well done and truly undeniable. The banter was also really excellent and super funny at times! However, every spicy scene (minus the first) was fade to black! Which should be a crime!

I get the impression from the epilogue of this book that there might be a sequel starring Harper and Jaime. If so, I'm down to read it!

It's hard to rate this book, as it felt extremely inconsistent to me. The first several chapters I almost put it down multiple times– there was too much vitriol in the conversation, not enough glimpses of hope. Yet at other times, the character connection shone.

A lot of things happenned at the  same time in this book, you had so much backstory in all the characters, all of them have some sort of traumatic past that is explored on the book and it's very overwhelming. Also, it's absurd that the main character is this rude to people who are providing him a service. Made me not like him so much, and the constant fights by the end made me believe that when they actually get together it's to small to make up for all the bad thing that happened. Also the representation here is null, just white people having white people problems. My biggest problem with the book was the way the Scottish accent was written, it really got on the way of the reading to have to "translate" in my brain what those words were in regular English. But is a light well-written read that you can do in a day and be done with it.
