It is hard to explain, to the current generation, what it was like as a child during the Space Race.
It was a huge deal. A super huge deal. The United States, and perhaps the whole world, watched as we got closer and closer to landing on the moon. I was only 9, in 1968, and although I don't remember the mission that took this picture, I do remember seeing the photo, over the years. Such a cool picture.
During the moon landing, in 1969, which happened in the Summer, I remember our 5th grade class had to write a short story about what they would find on the moon, before school was let out.
The pictures in this book are so cool. They both follow a little Black girl, as well as the astronauts on the Apollo 8.

An excellent book to introduce the children of today the story of the earthrise photo, as well as the Apollo missions.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

Earthrise is a beautiful, short non-fiction book with clear and concise text that is perfect for inspiring young space-loving readers. The illustrations work well with the simple text. I love that the book is based around an iconic image and that it provides some background to the image.

Precious and perfect. I teach third grade science, and we learn all about space. It is hard for little ones to conceptualize real discoveries, and they definitely have a tough time connecting civil rights heroes and astronauts to the same time period. This book is simple enough to be a readaloud while providing valuable context and enriching educational opportunities. I will be using it every year!
Just like the picture captured an important view of the world, this book does that too. A great snapshot of the time.
This book was fantastic! It offers a glimpse into the making of the historical photo that changed the way humans looked at our planet.
A very accessible look at the Apollo 8 mission and the picture of the earth they took. I never realized that's where the iconic picture came from. The author did a great job setting the stage of conflicts taking place then without getting bogged down in details. It's a gentle introduction to the Apollo 8 mission and space flight in general recommended for K-5.
This book puts Apollo 8 into perspective by showing what the world was like at the time and how people reacted to a photo that Bill Anders took of the Earth rising over the moon.
I read & evaluated this book for the Vancouver Children's Round Table (VCLR)'s 2019 Information Book Award.
This book had a unique concept, focusing on the photograph's impact versus the actual mission of Apollo 8. The book is beautifully illustrated with timely colour schemes. It was also nice to see a non-white main character. However, there were some things that left me asking questions about the mission and I wish it had reconciled more clearly how the photograph/mission helped the cultural divide.
