4.5 stars. In terms of a short story collection, I don’t imagine it gets much better than this - raw and memorable with beautiful prose that isn’t needlessly flowery. Personal favorites of mine were “The Race Grows Sweeter Near the Final Lap” and “I Seemed Plucky and Game, Even to Myself”.

— i’ve been trying to get into non fiction for a while and i think this was the perfect start. what a lovely compilation of short little stories and a wonderful reminder that love is the most powerful force on earth.

Even though I'd previously read most of the Modern Love entries on the acclaimed New York Times column, I still couldn't resist buying my own shiny copy (just look at the adorable pink cover!). I appreciate a lot of these stories about love and what it means- different kinds of love and all the wonderful, sometimes heartbreaking stories that surround it.

This collection of stories is a quick read. Of course, some are better than others, and a few in the last section about mothers really had me choked up.

I loved reading this because the stories were so short and I can easily read one or two even when I'm busy! I've already read the ones that were included in the TV series, but I had a great time revisiting them again. Here are my personal favorites:

The Race Grows Sweeter Near Its Final Lap by Eve Pell
When Eve and Eve Bit the Apple by Kristen Scharold
Would My Heart Outrun Its Pursuer? by Gary Presley
Truly, Madly, Guiltily by Ayelet Waldman
You May Want to Marry My Husband by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
Now I Need a Place to Hide Away by Ann Hood
Rallying to Keep the Game Alive by Ann Leary
When Mr. Reliable Becomes Mr. Needy by Katherine Tanney
Beyond Divorce and Even Death, a Promise Kept by Jennifer Just
