A delightful read. It’s hard to judge this reading this directly after loving the first book.

I particularly liked the interactions and authentic greyness with parents and among the secondary characters. I also liked the final act didn’t hinge on a grand gesture.

This did such a fair treatment of Lucie. I love how their relationship was grown and fought for. The ending is truly right for her character.

I loved Tristan and Lucie so much. I’m a sucker for a man who pines from afar, especially when he has been for years.
The reveal about her cat absolutely killed me.
If I were in this story I would want to be Lucie’s friend. She’s so determined and stubborn (in the best way) and I would happily read an entire series about her work with the Cause. In Bringing Down the Duke I was disappointed that the suffragette plot line wasn’t explored as much, so I was very happy to see how prominent it was in A Rouge of One’s Own. Docking a point for the imperialist undertones (
and the tattoo, which I physically cringed at
), but I was happy to see the author not excuse it as much as I remember in the BDTD.

This was not my favorite of the series so far (the first one was fine!), but I will continue on and see if I like the third one. First of all, I found the inclusion of the Shiva tattoo to be ..... a choice. I don't know, I just felt it was unnecessary and if you're going to do something like this, as a white writer, you need to do your due diligence and you *need* to hire sensitivity readers. I appreciate whenever historical romance tries to add commentary on the racism, sexism, colonization, etc. of the time, but you still need to do it with immense care.

Tristan & Lucie were okay; I do enjoy a slow burn because I love the unraveling of each character and the final ultimate "okay fine you have broken down my walls and I want you!" That is always delicious. However, I just could not find the male love interest that redeemable. Was he charismatic and had his sweet moments? Yes, absolutely. I just didn't feel he redeemed himself, that's all!

Steam was a 2.5/5
