this book was fantastic. i can’t even describe how perfect the banter was. the tension was literally unreal. i was probably screeching for at least 75% of the reading time. PERFECTION.

I was worried this book wouldn't live up to the first in the series but I had no reason to be. Evie Dunmore does it again!

This book is so damn tender, so sharply vulnerable, and so historically grounded. Lucie is a heroine you instantly love; her insecurities about being too difficult to love protected by a hard exterior of cold intelligence and wit are incredibly charming, and they offer a lot for readers to relate to. We've all secretly felt lonely, wondered if we would have to make ourselves small to be loved, worried that if we're too much ourselves we'll chase away everyone close to us.

Tristan is a first-class scoundrel with a heart of gold. The "I've always loved you" dynamic is so strong with these two, and the way he quickly realizes how badly he needs Lucie, while knowing she doesn't need him at all, is just so sweet. I love the way Lucie let's herself soften and the way Tristan gains purpose when they're together.

The balance between internal and external conflict is just perfect in this book! The sex could have been a little sexier but the yearning between these two is so powerful it makes up up that. I just loved it.

The first book in this series was much better. This was a difficult book. Tristan was such an awful hero for a romance novel, full of sexism and belittling Lucy, until the very end of the book, when he was suddenly the perfect book boyfriend. Lucy was a trope of a dumb heroine, knowing that getting involved with a man she disliked so much was a bad idea and doing it anyway. But because HEA, the massive waving red flags were miraculously cleared away. I think if Tristan had been just a rake an not a sexist asshole, I might have enjoyed this as much as others seem to. I couldn’t look past it.

Lucie and Tristan's story was such a fantastic addition to this series about strong men and women and the struggle for women's rights in 19th century England! I adored both main characters to equal degree, and loved them together even more. Even as HEA romance, I was so curious to see how these two could end together by the end?! With all the odds against them?!! They both deserve so much, I was worried for them, okay. As I'm working on my undergrad thesis, which incorporates contemporary journal discourse surrounding late 18th century prison systems, the periodical talk in this book got me so excited. Dunmore has clearly done her research, and I appreciate every moment of her smart, informed romances. This series has the perfect blend of romance, history, and activism, and it never disappoints.
