A lovely story and murder mystery all wrapped up around a Folklore tale.

I found the characters loveable and was was really routing for some of them throughout the book.

I quite enjoyed jumping back and forward between the main characters perspectives. I did find the timeline a little hard to follow though so gave up on that part and just enjoyed the story.

I felt there were a couple of things never quite fully explained but I think this worked well with the fact this book had a strong link to a Folklore story that in itself has a lot of mystery wrapped around it.

This has me enthusiastic about reading her other works. I was transported immediately into the world she built and absorbed in the tale. I appreciated Ji Lin's intelligence, resourcefulness, loyalty, and ferocity.

Rating this four stars for now, but may come back and tweak that after I figure out what I think of some of the themes and situations in the book. It was definitely an engaging read regardless, though not, in my opinion, quite as entrancing as The Ghost Bride.

This book was fantastic, practically perfect. Even though this book was super slow I was engrossed and enjoyed a lot. I liked the adventure feel of the story with the countdown to retrieve and bury the doctor's finger. The powerful recreation of a 1931 Malaya. At points, I did feel like I could see the 1931 Ipoh and Batu Gajah, in spite of my aphantasia. And the telenovela feel! Books that read like a telenovela are always such a treat to me. Now, I'm not super thrilled with the romance (I'm almost never into romances until and if the writing and buildup makes me get into them, and I'll read whatever as long as I like it). But did I get turned on by Ji Lin and Shin? Yeah lol so that's what matters at the end of the day for me. All the boring, faux appalled people can go cry about it and leave Yangsze alone. If you sit there and think about it, what Yangsze Choo did was just a more bolder, spicier childhood friends to lovers and that one most everyone's into so stfu.

I kept waiting and hoping this book would rope me in and I'd become actually invested in the characters or the story, but it really didn't unfortunately. I enjoyed the premise, I enjoy a good mystery, but it kind of felt like it had too many irons in the fire and TOO many mysteries for me to be really engaged with any of them. Without spoiling, after the MacFarlane storyline was resolved, it felt like the story just went haywire with twists and turns and lost the plot, so to speak.
