I really loved this one. I love all the characters and the dynamics. I think this books has amazing representation of the limits of women in the past. I highly reccomend to anyone trying to expand their reading and looking for rich stories with good writing.

4/5 stars. I’m writing this review many months after having finished this audiobook, and the feelings are still with me. This story is dark and moody. The tension made me angsty, and I was rooting for the characters to have a happy ending. I never thought I would read this type of story, so I am happy that the format of audiobook has allowed me to expand my reading range. I also enjoyed exploring the story and characters’ beliefs through the myth of the night tiger. Great audiobook!

I loved the writing of this, the characters and the Chinese mythology in this. Incredibly well done. Our main protagonist is working in a dance hall to pay of her mother’s Mahjong debt. I personally hated the romance though and that knocks it down a star.

The writing!!!! Beautiful as always.
And as I've mentioned, the audio book (read by the author) is phenomenal.
Perhaps my least favorite of the three books I've read by Choo but still better than a lot of other books I've ever read. The narrative is sweeping and mysterious, drawing you in until your curiosity won't let you draw away.

Interesting concept and loved the setting as someone with malayu heritage. The characters were also interesting.
It was incredibly slow going tho. Like there were a lot of words with very little action, it was so much building building building before anything started going.
I didn't love the romance in it either although it did grow on me by the end.
The inner flap snippet makes this book sound much more interesting than it actually turned out to be. Even the action/intrigue was so slow.
I listened to the audiobook while following along with the physical book, and I'm so glad I did because otherwise I might've dnf'd it or gotten bored partway through and taken even longer to finish it.

Slow start getting into this book, but did end up keeping my attention and engagement despite being predictable or being something I would not take too seriously - not very impactful, felt more like an easy “tiktok” read or somehow “cartoonish.” This does mean it was bad - I was still so entertained and zoomed through the second half!
