At a baseline, I like any book that encourages young people to question rules/laws/status-quo, the people who make them, and who exactly benefits from them being upheld, but this one had too much going on.
This will be an easy sell, the game scenes are vivid and grand, the action is exciting, the stakes are high, it just wasn't for me!
If you listen to the audiobook, I found the narration to be less grating at 1.5x speed.

I originally ordered this for my school library because of the reviews and the cover. It was then named to our state award list, very deservedly so. This was a very interesting story. I would recommend it for readers who are too young for Hunger Games but want something along those lines.

After this book and Mirrorwood, I’ll read anything by Deva Fagan. Just excellent!
A well-written book about a society that values wealth over independence and is taken down by a gang of misfits and rejects. This would be a perfect introduction for any 3rd-5th grader interested in something like Hunger Games but not as dark.
