I like the idea of the premise but the execution feels fundamentally off - if the Ali/Aladdin character is comically bad and the Jafar character is ultimately good, then it hasn't really accomplished the idea of picking the villain instead of the hero. Maybe that wasn't what KR was intending to do anyway, but that was my assumption going in, so it didn't exactly hit for me.  Solid spice though!

I really enjoy the Dark Olympus series by Robert so I had high hopes for this series. It took me a long time to figure out that this series is actually somewhat connected to that series but comes before. I don't know why that was so hard for me to figure out but alas.

I thought this book was written pretty well. Nothing spectacular but also didn't make me edit in my head as I read. There were a lot of dark themes in this book so definitely check the tags below before you read. I think they were handled pretty well but since they're not really my thing I didn't get fully pulled into the story.

My main complaint in this story was that a lot of the drama between the MCs hinged so much on miscommunication or just not communicating in general and that's one of my least favorite tropes but maybe that's just a personal preference.

One thing Robert does well is write strong women and I did really appreciate how Jasmine was allowed to stay that way.

I will definitely be reading further in this series.

Author's tags: my father's second-in-command wants me, if you make it to the front door you're free but if you don't you're mine forever, captive heroine, villains do it better, BDSM, exhibitionism, role-play, safe words, daddy kink
