I chose to read these books because Novik’s “Uprooted” is a masterpiece.
But this series is, listen, it’s fine.
It’s as if I had an unforgettable meal prepared by a chef. And then later that chef went on to make a line of frozen pizzas, and I thought, why not? Should be good.
And then they were fine. But I ate them for the whole week. It’s fine.

This book was much darker and more disturbing than the previous two, but still felt like the appropriate conclusion for the story. There were some absolutely insane reveals, but all of them managed to perfectly fit the groundwork and foreshadowing laid in the last two books. The social commentary in this book also felt true to the heart of the previous two, just cranked up a few horrifying and uncomfortable notches.

I do wish the ending had been a little less rushed, because I'm honestly still a little confused by how their solution worked and how it's going to hold up long-term. I also could have done without the love triangle that was shoehorned in as if Novik suddenly remembered she was writing a YA series.

So much of this book is in El’s head and she is (in general) filled with so much rage. If that’s not something you’d like, you’ll probably want to steer clear. But if you’ve read the first two books then at this point, you should know what to expect. The thing I like about El is that even though she does have so much anger bottled up inside, she rarely explodes. She’s usually able to reign herself in and still makes good, well thought-out decisions. I was also glad that we still got to see some of the characters from school. There were parts of this book that were a tad bit confusing for me, but in the end, I feel like I understood everything I needed to. An unexpectedly satisfying conclusion to this series.

So hard to get through? Really there were so many events packed in with not enough in between that it felt like a rollercoaster and I kept feeling like I had missed something... That being said, really enjoyed the twists and further world building to finish the trilogy!
