Like nothing I've ever seen before. An experience. Art. A true one-off.

Bravo.

Thank you to the author, John Boden for sending me some of his work to check out in exchange for honest reviews.
And in the spirit of total transparency and honesty-I'm a sucker for clever packaging. In terms of books, the packaging, i.e. the book cover and general design can start winning me over before I even read a word.
I pulled Dominoes from the shipping envelop and I gasped. I'm a closet Golden Book collector, first of all so this Golden Book inspired artwork on the cover had my eyes all glazed over with swoony love. The attention to detail is ridiculous. The classic Golden Book spine looks similar at first blush but the illustrated animals and characters have been replaced with sinister skulls. The dewey eyed children are so cute with their expressions of...what's this? Anxiety? Upon closer inspection, you see a thin "fishing line" wrapped around each of their necks and one girl is dangerously hanging a toe off the edge of...what? And why does she wear a different expression than the other three children?
I eagerly opened to the title page to see my own name scribbled in rainbow letters under the heading, "This Book Belongs To:"
I admit. I'm sold at this moment. *raises hand*
John Boden then begins his book with, "The Next to the Last Dawn" and it's now that I discover I'm in for apocalyptic horror told in the least expected format: Flash fiction style chapters of the most disturbing, uncomfortable horror accompanied with childlike illustrations depicting the ugliness of the text. It's so dark and macabre to see this seemingly perfect children's book completely fucked up with the worst possible prose and pictures of human depravity. It's brilliant.
Every horror collection needs it.
Mother Horror approves this for all my dark, ugly little children.

A Little Golden Book of Horror!

Surreal scenes, bits of song lyrics, shout outs to all kinds of authors, and a little beheading!

Clever, cool and a heck of a lot of fun! Highly recommended!
