This book was wow. Reading the synopsis my first thought was, "That is a lotttt of trouble to pack into one book." And it was. But S.A. Cosby did it SO well. At first glance, I thought this was going to be a book about a school shooting. I dropped that thought by the end of the first two chapters. Instead, the story spiraled into a serial killing investigation, further murders, and exploring the effects of racism on many things, but most notably on a Black sheriff. The lens that racism was explored was different than the standard addressing of a topic like that. Rather than just throw in blatant racist events, the author also included a lot of systemic issues and highlighted how the justice system is so broken. There was an undercurrent of Titus Crown's guilt regarding some event that happened in his past. Honestly, I think this was the only part of the book that disappointed me.
I know that he was forced to leave the FBI because he shot a suspect after an explosion. But, seriously, I agree with his brother that he should be proud of that, haha. Maybe that makes me not good enough for the FBI too, but that guy deserved it after intentionally killing his wife and children in an explosion.

Overall, this was definitely a five-star read for me. I love a good cop thriller and have read many. This was absolutely a top one!

A very good book love this author. Definitely some dark parts but a good mystery that kept moving.
