There were several times I wanted to scream at the narrator (a child) but the overall story was a good look into the social environment of the day.  I was hoping for not really a different ending, but a more complete ending.

This is a really interesting story but it’s just way too harsh for me to handle right now.

This one of the best books I have ever read. It has a similar vibe as To Kill A Mockingbird but goes much more into depth about the racial injustices that POC faced in the 1960’s in America while also tying it into the main plot. The book manages to have the perfect balance of seriousness while also being light hearted. The character development from the main character as well as others in the book is done both heartbreakingly and beautifully. I highly recommend this to everyone.

v. White Savior. The plot was predictable, black characters only served to help the white mc grow, and doesn’t grapple with racism in any meaningful way. The black main character is the mamie stereotype, and her only plot points are being abused and wanting to take care of the white mc. Not the worst book ever, and certainly well-intended, but I’d recommend choosing something else
