before going into this, it should be known that there's going to be lots of exposition and that zombies aren't the main focus but rather, the concept that lies in tandem as the foundation for a narrative that examines the nature of politics, media and corruption. with that being said, my brain lapped up every word enthusiastically because i'm a sucker for all of those things. i don't know if it's just me but i deeply enjoy mira grant's writing style and find it very easy to get through without feeling bored like the set-up of the narrative and characterisation is always done so well. the only gripe i have is that some things did start feeling a little repetitive (do we need to hear about the details of the medical tests that many times) and some of the dialogue felt a bit superhero movie-ish.

I think 3 1/2 is suitable. This book feels very 2014, it’s riddled with Not Like Other Girls Vibes from Georgia, and I don’t think there’s a single woman in the book she talks positively about. Whereas 90% of the men she’s fawning over. Because of this the emotional beats that concerned her didn’t hit as hard, and I enjoyed the book more when she wasn’t there…oops. Also the problem with the plot being stretched over such a long period of time (as it has to be) is that it feels very exposition-y and like Grant is just throwing words at you. Also I didn’t remember who the antagonist was when they revealed it.

That being said, I enjoyed the ride this took me on. I think Grant mixes comedy, word building and tragedy well together. I think George makes an interesting character (even if I don’t like her), and her dynamic with the group was a bit I liked a lot. That being said…her relationship with Shaun got a little too weird for me sometimes. As someone with step siblings galore I understand my situation is different but sometimes they gave me the ick. But I enjoyed their banter too.  I loved the Masons. They seem like a very complicated family, and I love how they serve as secondary antagonists from the get-go! I hope they appear in the second and third novels.

More Buffy plz thank you!
I think I’ll enjoy the second book more.

yeah, overall I ended up liking this book more the second time. I still can't forgive the way the female candidate was written, though

Pretty good depiction of what life after zombies might be like. Pacing was good. Main complaint is the exposition was repetitive - several things were explained to us several times throughout the book in almost the same wording.

This series was my introduction to Mira Grant, and now I have multiple shelves dedicated solely to this incredibly prolific (and epidemiologically well-informed) author. Also she's a delightful individual.
