Couldn't do it. Couldn't finish this one, it was so absurd. AND YOU KNOW THIS IS SAYING SOMETHING.

This is a 2 ½★ rounded up.

The Alien Invasion series is not some of Philips' best work, imho.

But.

It's not terrible either. It is quite entertaining if you can allow yourself to get into the story.

It's more that the Yehrin--the aliens for the series--are hard to like as people. A lot about them is terrible and unlikable. They're a race whose sole focus is to conquer other worlds in the hopes of finding breeding-compatible females because... in the past they engineered themselves to birth way more males than females and now it's an issue. They need women.

Man, if I had a dollar for every time this idea comes up in SFR, I would buy a lot more books.

So they find worlds, conquer them, go through the trouble of testing genetic compatibility and then do breeding trials. (One note, they do actually try to perform some good during these times by aiding the conquered planet in preserving their environment and their health. They're a bit obsessed with the idea of preservation. I suppose in their mind it makes the rest OK or is a fair trade off for all of the killing and female theft.) The Yehrin are not a empathetic or sympathetic people and quell any resistance aggressively: submit or die. Things are how they are, and that's it. They take everything. So if dub-con is not your thing, find another series to read, because for a good majority of the book, things are sketchy.

As such, I feel the male lead is no real swoon-worthy man. T'lan has his moments where he could be sweet if it wasn't under this film of creepy aggressiveness. He cares about Emily, but everything is off and not quite right. The constant focused hum of BREED BREED BREED in the background makes it hard to be at ease with the pairing and go with it. The physical description of his size and his penis is not as enticing as a lot of Phillips' other leads. Every time they had sex, I couldn't help but wince and feel bad. (Again, not a typical reaction to Phillips' work.)

Emily. Man. Depending on what kind of degree she earned, she's 22-25 years old, and an overgrown girl. A dime for like a gross of them in this genre. So all of the usual stuff I am critical of, it's all here. She's not an interesting character.

SpoilerAnd the Tren/Emlan thing? EW. Why did we need to go there?

If you can get past the ICK, this is entertaining to read. It's well written and edited. I will likely try another book or two and see if it improves with other characters.

This was a good book it was suggested to read by a friend and it didn’t disappoint... the story line was interesting and sucked me in and made me curious what what happen next I will say the main character emily made me slightly annoyed here and there with her stubbornness about certain things but that’s just me ... great book from a great author!!!
