This is probably one of the most challenging books I've ever read - I probably picked it up and started it 5 times across 10 years before finally getting through it all. Literary wise it's a thrill - keeping track of the the characters in all their timelines and perspectives was a challenge, and I loved the way the book showed all the different ways the house affected folks. Definitely recommend!

So far it seems like this is a horror story about film criticism. I don't know. I'm only half way through.

Now that I'm finished I'm sure this was a horror story about film criticism.

A slow, captivating, overwrought, exciting, frustrating, beautiful read. Definitely several of the chapters were completely unnecessary, and the philosophical style writing gets really quick. Yes, the author puts some ironic distance between it with layers of meta fiction (it’s the kooky Zampano’s writing after all) but that doesn’t change the fact that the reader has to trudge through it. Otherwise, I still don’t know how to feel about this one, I think it will be sitting with me for a bit. If you like overdone, floral writing you will love this book. Otherwise you may still love it, but again treat it as an experience in itself. Last 100 pages or so I thought were incredibly powerful.

Absolutely LOVED all the formatting and layers of meta. I even like some really unpopular parts like the Echo chapter.
But I just don't care at all about any of the stories. They never captivated me fully. Both endings were also really not up my alley for very different reasons.

Overall a book were I don't care about its actual content but just how cool it was structured.

Well worth the few sleepless nights. I am not usually one for a scare but I just could not ignore the beauty that is in this book. The most visually interesting book I have seen in a long time. Caught up in my own paranoia I was luckily able to finish this fantastic book.

The fact that I want 10 copies of this to cut up and tack to my walls with various colors if twine is a testament to how well it's written and how effective it as at doing what it set out to do. I couldnt stop and I still dont want to stop but I didnt havefun either. I think I'm in a death cult now. Dont read this.
