The message is 5 stars. The messenger is 2 stars. There are so many things wrong in the delivery of the material but so much right in its impact. I will read this book again and I will learn and grow from it for many years. But, I will always wish for it to be repackaged in a better way.

The first sections of this book were great and really insightful. the book was pretty straight and male oriented, but still enjoyed reading it and found it valuable!

A decent book. But the author lost a lot of credibility when he got on his filthy liberal soapbox. Leave politics out of your books!

Notes:

There is no redeeming quality in harshness. I would also add that my Hatred has no harshness.

Functional actions in a relationship are moves that empower your partner to come through to you; dysfunctional will render your partner paralyzed.

In our closest relationships we become our mother and father. We all marry our unfinished business.

It's better to ask a person, "why don't they cheat?"

Some people don't realize they actually have a family and that certain behaviors, actions, etc. need to change.

The best way to open another's heart is to open your own.

There are seven primary feelings: joy, pain, anger, fear, shame, guilt, and love.

We are sickened sometimes by what we can't stop thinking about, but we can be even more damaged by what we refuse to think about.

Very interesting. Real’s approach seems to be a blend of differentiation theory and attachment theory, and I can appreciate that, as I’m not sure that either of those schools of thought has a monopoly on good ideas.
