5✨ this book is heartbreaking and beautiful and tragic and wonderful and has burrowed its way into my soul.
*please beware of spoilers*
iwan. oh, iwan. he calls her lemon and i just dropped dead. he was just so sweet. he romanticizes life the way it should be romanticized and why is that so attractive. he was loud and boisterous and full of life even at his down moments. like just being with his lemon breathed life back into him. i know he’s a ginger but in my mind he is a dark haired delicious man. his tattoo’s and what they mean just make him even better. he changed and grew and stayed the same in all the best ways. seven years and so much happened. and in all that time he thought of her, he loved her, he never forgot her, he waited for her. and in seven years, he never regretted that. every moment, every minute, every day waiting was worth it. for her. because she was love in a lemon pie. he got a lemon flower for her.
i felt so kindred with clementine. lost and helpless and hopeless and uncertain of what to do in life. feeling alone and lonely in a city apartment day in, and day out. and her favourite colour is yellow? i’m done for. she was just such an amazing character. she was brave and adventurous and she took chances and appreciated what she had. she didn’t need to be fixed. she needed to be reminded that she was human. she needed a minute to find her place. and there’s nothing wrong with that. iwan understood that. and the way she loved iwan…it pure and uncomplicated and real and just so lovely.
their banter was amazing. their back and forth, their friendship, their stolen moments and finger brushes and longing looks, all of it was beautiful. this was just so incredibly beautiful. everything about clementine and iwan was so beautiful. the magical realism, right-person-wrong-time, the second chance. the beauty that was them and their love, their past, present & future, how it all came together. i can’t talk about how much i loved it enough. ashley’s writing is amazing and just sucks you right in, allows you to visualize and live on the page. this book spoke to my soul, it has forever altered me, i’m just floored by it. it hit me in my heart in a way i never expected yet saw coming all the same. i just knew from the lemons this was gonna be a big one for me and it absolutely was. (irrelevant fun fact: i’ve always been obsessed with lemons). and now it has settled in the depths of my soul and decided to live there and i am okay with that.
“I loved how a book, a story, a set of words in a sentence organized in the exact right order, made you miss places you’ve never visited, and people you’ve never met.”
“That was love, wasn't it? It wasn't just a quick drop — it was falling, over and over again, for your person. It was falling as they became new people. It was learning how to exist with every new breath. It was uncertain and it was undeniably hard, and it wasn't something you could plan for.”
“Isn't it strange how the world works sometimes? It's never a matter of time, but a matter of timing.”
“You only live once. And if you do it right, once is all you need.”
“You kiss like you dance. […] Like someone waiting to be asked. You can just dance, Lemon. You can take the lead.”
“He was an adventure. One I suddenly knew I wanted to take.”
“Love in a lemon pie.”
“Because the things that mattered most never really left. The love stays. The love always stays, and so do we.”

4.5/5!! Such a good comfort book after having read a heavy book previous to this. A bittersweet book with comedy, romance, grief, and a bit of magic. A little predictable but it didnt make it any less of a great read!
