I really don't like to DNF books, but this wasn't doing it for me. The dystopian premise seemed really interesting, but for such a short book, Dimaline should have fleshed out the world much, much earlier. I wanted to try to get to 100 pages to see if the setting/premise becomes clearer, but seeing some other reviews leads me to believe it doesn't really get fleshed out at all. I also didn't find the writing interesting or compelling.

I really loved and was rooting for all of these characters (and I live for a found family narrative). The only aspect I was disappointed in was the worldbuilding - this world has SUCH a fascinating premise, but I felt like it took a backseat in the story and I wish it had been built out a bit more.
