"My body" is a collection of essays—or a memoir—where Emily Ratjakowski reflects her thoughts on feminism, fame, beauty, misogyny and the toxic environment around modeling industry.
I'm surprised by how much I actually liked it. First, I have to say that Emily Ratjakowski is a wonderful writer. Her storytelling just pulls you in immediately and she is such a well-spoken, intelligent woman.
"My body" was such a vulnerable, honest and deep memoir. Before reading this book, I didn't know much about her, only that she was a model. But throughout this book, I got to know more about her as this memoir was very personal and insightful to her life. It made me feel infuriated at times because of the mistreatment and abuse Emily went through but this book was also empowering in many ways.
Overall, I'm glad I picked up this book and I will definitely read more from Emily Ratjakowski

I really didn’t think I would like this at all, but Emily Ratajkowski's memoir surprised me. The book offers a fascinating insider perspective into an industry ruled and owned by men that reek of misogyny.
In her memoir, Ratajkowski details her experiences in the fashion industry as a young woman, she attempts to assert her power through her beauty and desirability, but admits to struggling with confidence. The qualities that she thinks give her power over men are actually used and abused by men in the industry, time and time again they profit off her body. She details times in her life she has been left alone, unprotected and vulnerable.
Throughout the book, Emily shows personal growth, no longer being reliant on male validation. Instead, in the last three chapters especially she shows her anger and frustration, finally understanding how she has been deceived and abused by men. This book perfectly captures Emily's journey in life, and coming to an understanding of the ways in which the world works and her place in it. Although she writes off her own experiences, I found there were many aspects of the novel that were relatable.
Emily does not shy away from the ugly moments in this memoir, and for this reason alone, it is worth reading.

Would anyone care to read what I had to write had I not impressed men like you?
I’m in awe of the sheer amount of introspection and inner work it must have taken the author to write this book. Abuse and exploitation is not always physical, and she describes how brutally the double-edged sword (of presenting as an attractive female) cuts both ways.
I think of her and the other naked women who line the walls and fill the halls of museums, some so ancient the color has washed from their bodies and their marble heads have fallen off. It would be easy to mistake these displays for symbols of respect, for an honor. But what were their lives?

And what were their names? No one remembers.
