This was a fun little read full of spooky goodness. Far from horror for horror's sake, almost every single story within this anthology was making commentary on a greater issue - something I thought all of the authors did impeccably. A testament to the talent of everyone involved, these 1,500-word short stories really packed a punch - all having engaging plots, interesting characters, serious conflicts, and captivating settings.

My top favorite stories were:
The Family Dinner by: Michelle Zimmerman
Carbon Footprint by: Shelly Oria
The mask, the ride, the bag by: Chase Burke
Veins, like a system by: Eshani Surya
Caravan by:  Pedro Iniguez
Human Milk for Human Babies by: Lindsay King-Miller
Gabriel Metsu, man, writing a letter, c. 1664-66 by: Helen McClory

Other stories I liked included:
Doggy-dog World by: Hillary Leitchfield
Grimalkin by: Andrew F. Sullivan
Rearview by: Samantha Hunt
We've Been In Enough Places to Know by: Corey Farrenkopf
Lifeline by: J.S. breukelaar
Jane Death Theory by: Rion Amilcar Scott
The Blue Room by: Lena Valencia
Unbeknownst by: Matthew Vollmer
Candy Boii by: Sam j. Miller
The Unhaunting by: Kevin Nguyen
The Marriage Variations by: Monique Laban
Afternoons by: Bennett Sims
Fingers by: Rachel Hen
Katy Bars the Door by: Richie Narvaez
Pincers and Tongue by: Stephen Graham Jones
Cedar groove rose by: Canisia Lubrin
#mothermayhem by: Jei d. Marcade
Leg by: Brian Evenson
Downpour by: Joseph Salvatore
Pictures of Heaven by : Ben Lorry
Instrument of the Ancestors by: Troy L. Wiggins
Joy, and Other Poisons by: vajra Chandrasekaran

Overall I thought this was a really great read. Good for horror fans who just want something bite-sized to tide them over, but also diverse enough for newer horror readers to get a feeling for what they like. I was able to get to know a lot of new authors that I am excited to read more from.

If you're looking for horror in delicious bite-sized pieces, you absolutely must check out this very digestible collection. There's so much on offer - stories range from horrors rooted in the real world (domestic violence, heroin addiction, climate change) to fantastic creatures (vampires, witches, ghosts). The most unforgettable story for me was a chilling, ultra-short look at police brutality titled Jane Death Theory #13 by Rion Amilcar Scott. Another story I really enjoyed, The Marriage Variations by Monique Laban, was a choose-your-own-adventure format about an abusive marriage. Lastly, Guess by Meg Ellison features a man in a traveling carnival who knows how people's lives end. Guess was a perfectly crafted short scare that will stay with me long after reading.

All in all, this collection was the perfect way to encounter a wide variety of scares and authors. Highly recommend!

As with all anthologies, I liked some stories more than others. As someone who doesn't read horror, I found these stories approachable and some really freaked me out. I could see like a die-hard horror fan being unsatisfied, but these are short bites of stories by design and I think that they accomplish that.
