Honestly not sure how to feel about this one. There were parts that I really liked and parts that are an absolute slog.

The world-building is fun and interesting and I liked most of the characters but something is just not doing it for me here.

You know, I was debating for a bit between a 4.5 and a 5 star rating and thought "screw it." This book was SO GOOD. I can't even tell you why I was thinking of a 4.5 because I basically have no notes?
The characters and plot are fantastic! I was on the edge of my seat, wanting to read so quickly to find out what would happen next or what twist was coming up. Sure I predicted one or 2 twists but GOODNESS I DID NOT PREDICT THEM ALL 😅 and these characters!? I already adore Jude, Anton, and Hassan! I have some mixed feelings about Ephyra and Beru but SO CURIOUS to see where their stories will go.
And the political and religious commentary!? *chef's kiss* Wow. I loved it. There is just enough political and religious/cult commentary that I was VERY intrigued and it played into the plot so beautifully. I cannot wait to see where this story goes next!

Surprisingly, I enjoyed the story a lot. The characters are all complex and faced both personal struggles and struggle against choices that could change the world. The betrayal that Hassan faced is unexpected but at the same time not too shocking.
Hassan is not the Last Prophet is also something that I have seen coming, alongside Illya's shady behaviour. It means some part of the storyline is quite predictable. The elements of unpredictability such as Hector's death, how is Beru and Ephyra is supposedly going to destroy the world and the blank answer of how to stop the Age of Darkness is really fun. The world-building is excellent and I enjoyed the discrimination of the Graced that becomes the motive for the Witnessess and Hierophant. Hierophant and "Mrs Tappan" mystery; their identity and motive set up an exciting feeling for the next book. I'm also hopeful they would not become a one-dimensional antagonist if they are one.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this book beyond "not bad." The characters were interesting, but they all kind of blurred together; I'm not sure if I should lay that at the feet of the author's writing or the audiobook's narration, although I am lenaing toward the latter. The story took a while to get going, though I did like it once I got into it around a third into the book. Occassionally there were moments that stood out that really bugged me, and I thought the one major romance was pretty meh, but the rest of it was fine. Good enough that I want to continue the series, but nothing to write home about.
