Loved this book, made me cry just like the short video I had already seen. Xander liked the pictures. We read this for our Summer Reading Challenge. This was the read a book about a character who doesn't look like you challenge.

"Zuri's hair has a mind of its own. It kinks, coils, and curls every which way." This book was awesome. The cover shows a girl with lots and lots of hair on the shoulders of her dad. They both look very happy and content. The story starts off with Zuri in bed thinking about her hair and how her different hair styles let her be different things such as a princess and a super hero. She has a hairstyle for every day. The cat on the bed with her was funny, his thought bubble just showed a can of cat food. Zuri mentions today is a BIG day and she wants her hair to be perfect. She goes to get her dad but sees that he is sleeping and she knows how tired he is because of everything he does for her. She decides to try things on her own but has to ask for the help of her dad. Her dad tries his best to get it perfect but fails so they have to watch a hair tutorial. Once they are finally done, her mom comes home and comments how beautiful she looks. To me the big day was mom coming home. Maybe she works long hours or has to go away for work. The illustrations showed all the different hair styles that Zuri wears and trys out. I am not sure how I would use this book in a classroom, but maybe to show kids that gender roles don't have to be a thing and you can be a boy or girl and like the things of the opposite gender and be able to learn them as well.

Watch the short film too. The film and book are the same story without being identical, some parts of the film are better and some parts of the book are better, need both for the complete story.

This is the first children’s book I’ve read that isn’t from my “generation” of books. Beautiful. I love how the internet wasn’t a focus or negative aspect, just an asset of help.

So beautiful and poignant. I will be proud to pass this on to a future child of mine as a part of their childhood.

I saw the short first, and both smiled and cried. This story is very slightly different, but still deals with a young girl’s beautiful hair and how happy and proud she is to be able to express different sides of her personality through different styles, and how getting her dad’s help for a particular and special look is important for her mother’s homecoming. A sweet and lovely story.
