Destiny's Blood was an intense read filled with challenges and cliffhangers! Marie is not afraid to kill her darlings. A thrilling tale of twins, blood, death, life, love, destiny, and loyalty. I'm excited to see what the rest of the series has in store for me.

Marie Bilodeau has crafted an exciting, action-packed sci-fi adventure, filled with surprising plot twists and revelations. But it's very much a character-driven story, centred around twin sisters and the rogues, heroes and villains drawn into their orbit as they find themselves holding the fate of countless worlds in their hands.

The story is told from the point of view of a variety of characters, proving you don't have to write a brick in the mould of A Song of Ice and Fire to give a story epic scope. I found it a colourful and entertaining read.

I am a sucker for backstory, and a fully fleshed out setting. In that regard, my only complaint is that I would have liked a little more detail on the geo-political makeup of this universe, and how this future came to be, but I suspect we'll get more of that in the next two books.

I gotta hand it to her, Marie Bilodeau isn't afraid to kill characters she's made us care for. Which makes for an utterly heartbreaking and refreshing read.

But.

The story is entirely too heteronormative, white, and sexist. Not to mention the plotholes and convenient use of "ether".

Which is too bad because the first half is captivating and, although I found the writing oftentimes too conventionally contemporary, promises a good story with an intricately rich plot and world, and a deep characterization. She writes feelings and emotions with the most vivid physicality. She can make us feel for her characters, even the irrelevant ones, in a matter of few sentences.

The second half only offers too much action, plotholes, over-the-top twists, a very boring villain story, and a weird pace. To say that I was bored and disappointed would be putting it mildly.
