Listened to this audio book. Classic Palahniuk. Deranged, vulgar...you know.
dark funny

As I am with all things Palahniuk, I was a fan of Damned. I thought the setting of hell was innovative, and he was both creative and funny in his descriptions without sliding into fire and brimstone cliche. I enjoyed the perspective of the female protagonist -- even though she was only 13, I found her compelling and easy to root for in her journey, of sorts. She was smart, quick-witted, and someone with whom even adults could identify. About the only thing I could complain about was the abrupt ending of the novel, but it sets the stage for a sequel, which will conveniently be published in the month of my birthday, so I can easily forgive Palahniuk for suckering me into a piece of reading that's essentially unfinished. Due to my work schedule, it actually took me several months to complete the book, and a good argument for the quality of the literature is the fact that everything was so memorable to me, I was able to pick it back up and keep reading (without review) even after the massive break between start and finish. I don't recommend it as your first Palahniuk experience, but it's an outstanding book for the continued fan.

Made me think of death bh blah blah

I read Choke and Fight Club by Mr. Palahniuk (Mr. Paula Nick? PaLAHnick? Pala knee ack? I still don’t know!!) some years ago and was expecting this novel to also be a type of transgressive fiction. Because he imitated the writing style of Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Madison’s repetitive and annoying teenager voice made the novel seem less serious. On the other hand, because it’s far less graphic than his other novels, I think those new to Palahniuk could start off with this one.

I felt as though he explored a bunch of story arcs, but never developed them to their full potential. What seemed like a promising Breakfast Club story was scrapped almost immediately and replaced with equally underdeveloped stories about telemarketing and a Hell revolution. All of these story lines were quite clever and almost humorous, but I just wanted and expected much more.

Chuck is one of my favorite contemporary authors, and this book did not disappoint. I found it to be funny, clever, smart and impossible - traits common to most of Chuck's works. Great fun reading.

El hecho de que sea la primera de N cantidad de partes me desilusiona un poco. Por otra parte, espero que las siguientes partes vengan en sintonia con el caracter de los personajes descritos.
ESta chido, wee

Sad panda. I tried so many times but just couldn't get through it.

irriverente e comico in maniera intelligente come sempre: alcune parti sono assolutamente geniali (per citarne una, l'incontro con Psezpolnica vale l'intero libro).

I'll be honest and say that I didn't actually finish this book but eighty pages should be enough to know for sure whether or not I'll like the rest. This is the first Chuck Palahniuk book I've read since I was 17 and it's pretty terrible. I stopped reading his books when I was younger because I got tired of every book reading the same and every voice being just his. It's pretty depressing to see how little Palahniuk has grown as a writer. His work is super juvenile, trite and boring and formulaic and pissy. This guy is a joyless asshole who never bothered to grow up. I think at this point in his career Palahniuk is comfortable just writing books for teenagers who don't know any better and dudes in their twenties that think they're really smart and subversive. Don't waste your time.
