3.5 — listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a good job

This was my first Chuck P book and I was given the warning ahead of time by an avid fan to tread cautiously, that he isn’t everyone’s cup of tea

In evaluating his authorship, I enjoyed this. I like his writing style, and his version of Hell was creative and visceral, as well as the world building and rules of the world. There were scenarios and moments so absurd that they were funny - disgusting and amusing.

However, I was far more interested in our side characters than the MC. I didn’t care for Madison, and the book fell from anywhere in the 4 star range to 3.5 about 80% of the way through — normally I don’t mind predictability but I could tell it was going in a direction that I didn’t care for, as well as the obvious signs that we were getting set up for a sequel. I would have liked this book a lot more if it were a one-off.

Overall, it was fine and I am still interested in exploring his other works. Just from personal preference, I wouldn’t revisit this or seek out the sequel.

Holy shit I loved this book. The start was very slow and almost put me off but I got through it and I'm so glad I did. The characters are insane characatures but that seems like the style that Palahniuk seems to use. I had multiple moments of like "what the fuck is happening" in the best way. I can see why people would really hate this but I very much enjoyed it.

The part where she wanks off that demon is why it's not 5 stars for me. WTF was that scene man

Damned was a really enjoyable book, despite some of the pungent descriptions of Hell itself lol. I enjoyed the perspective of the main character, Maddy, and the telling of her life before and after she passed.  This book gave me many laughs, a different view on how I imagine Hell and also a gentle reminder to enjoy every moment I have on this earth.. because I could be eating popcorn balls for the rest of eternity 🤣

Side note: was not really a fan of all the religious talk in this book but you can’t expect not to have that in a book about Hell & I also loveddd looking up the Demons that were mentioned.. very captivating to me
