This is a book that is slow at first, but keeps you engaged, but then it starts running like a freight train and you can't slow down and you don't want to.

The first half of this book was a 5 star read and I was so excited, but unfortunately I felt like it started losing momentum and becoming repetitive which bumped it down a bit. I still really enjoyed this one and it kept me hooked as we follow the main character and her struggle with her faith and identity while a violent virus starts sweeping through America. We begin the novel following Sophie who is an incredibly sheltered Catholic girl dealing with grief of her brother being sent away, and guilt about him and also her inner thoughts. It was a wild ride watching her fight basically zombies, the other humans, and her own inner crisis as she learns more about the world.

I understand she was free for the first time in her life and experiencing attraction and infatuation. I just didn’t like how she was “forced” to end up with Ben because her other two love interests died. It felt she got defaulted instead of figuring it out on her own like the writer didn’t know how to write her making the choice.  She stared Ben was the most physically attractive, but she said she had a deep actual connection with a 23 year old (ick to me) and then ended up with Ben because there was no one else  and he was hot. Also the dog dying KILLED ME. It made me feel such big emotions and I won’t ever be over that.

It’s giving The Last of Us x It Follows.

I enjoyed this book. It gives a different perspective on how someone who was sheltered growing up would view an apocalypse. It is a quick read which is its downfall since the end of the book felt a bit rushed. Other than that I liked it.
