Starts off well, but too many (for me) POV and red herrings and an unsatisfying ending. Also started to get bored

I really struggled with this. On paper it should have been right up my street - a locked room mystery set on a lighthouse, but it just didn't land, I came close to a DNF. I found it hard to keep track of the multiple POVs and who was married to who or doing what with whom, and I realised about halfway through that I didn't care about most of them. Maybe it was the writing style.

Mixed feelings on this - it did grip me for the first 200 pages or so, but I found myself getting a bit impatient with it as I got into the last 150. I found the constant vague hinting grating after a while. The writing was pretty good, but I found the ending a bit anticlimactic, and the resolution of the survivors & writer’s story a bit hamfisted. 2 stars feels a bit harsh but I didn’t like this as much as I like most books I give 3 stars.

Haunting and atmospheric. I really felt pulled in to the lives of the lighthouse keepers and their families, the wives who shared their husbands with the Maiden rock lighthouse, the complexities and sordidness that the keepers tried to keep at bay from their simple immaculately clean lighthouse lives. And always there, inescapable, in the background yet dictating every move, the sea.

Stock whodunnit really but the lighthouse setting makes for added intrigue and the insight into life of lighthouse keepers in the 1970s was welcome
