There wasn't anything new or enlightening in this book. Alice Fryling, an aging spiritual director and author, addresses numerous issues we face as we grow older. I can definitely relate. The book does make you reflect on physical, emotional, relational changes that occur during the aging process. I didn't agree with all aspects of her doctrinal beliefs. My takeaway is: We should accept these changes. Don't expect to be able to do everything you once could. Draw close to God. Make the most of the rest of your life.

Look, gang: if we’re lucky, we’re all going to get old. That’s why we eat right and exercise, right? So we can get old?

Well, as many writers will tell us, getting old is no picnic. We need to be ready not just financially, not just intellectually, but spiritually. To that end, Alice Fryling’s “Aging Faithfully” is an important book for the Christian reader. It discusses the challenges of living at a time when one has accrued so much wisdom, yet one’s cognition and speech has slowed to a point such that younger people are too impatient to hear it. It discusses the challenges facing those who define themselves by their abilities to do things in the world when those abilities decline. Most importantly, it discusses these challenges through the lense of one who is walking, or who is trying to to walk, with God.

Furling is a gifted writer. Her prose is clear, concise, and easy to read. While reading her, one gets the sense of time spent with a wise elder. It’s time well spent. I recommend this book to anyone who plans to grow old.
