The true story of Tommie Smith's journey to the Olympics and his impact on history.
This was such a powerful book! It's a graphic novel that is really accessible to kids. The illustrations were so captivating and beautiful. I really enjoyed the mix of history (ie the Civil Rights Movement) and Tommie Smith's own experience. It was really well blended and gave a great context to his experience. As a teacher, I really appreciated how much detail went into explaining how hard Tommie worked and how he wanted to make the world a better, more accepting place.

This is an excellent graphic novel about the life of Olympic medalist Tommie Smith and the events that led up to the iconic protest picture from the 1968 Olympics. It’s a great book for middle grade students.

Wow! I remember learning about Tommie’s story in a high school history class however, I didn’t realize who this was until I got to that tumultuous moment at the Olympics. Amazing ❤️

(TW for racial slur)I didn't know about a lot of Tommie Smith's advocacy or how harsh the Olympic Committee was on he and John Carlos after they raised their fist. And he tied a world record and then immediately got himself to the Selma march! And they got the Olympic committee to hire more black coaches and fire the Nazi on the committee! I learned a lot and the graphic format is fun too. Also also, cool tie to Ohio that Oberlin offered him the first real job he had post Olympics when Pontiac fired him!
