Powerful writing, but troublingly of its time with misogyny, homo- and fat-phobias.

Some of the stories are better than others . But the stand outs for me that left me breathless were “On Trains “ and “Hue and Cry”. ESPECIALLY HUE & CRY !!!
This short story collection is not a collection to be read leisurely . These stories are a literary readers dream where you have to think , you often will need to re-read, and the ending and certain things left unsaid are up to you to determine . So if you’re someone who DOES NOT like literary fiction such as this….then this collection will NOT be for you and you probably won’t get it or it will feel like a homework assignment.
Although I LIVE for great literary fiction , and if you do too than this is a collection for you . This collection is an experience that feels REAL . I could envision the characters, the setting, feel the chaotic and complicated emotions , while feeling myself layering certain aspects of these stories over my own life.
Some of over lapping topics and themes for these stories were black men experiencing interracial dating , survival after leaving home , homosexuality ,work and it’s value. In addition to the ever changing question of the meaning of survival?
This collection is full of wisdom that I’ll be re-reading and to think this was a blind buy I didn’t even know I needed !!

Hue and Cry
I loved this collection- I truly wish we had read this in high school or college - it resonates with a lot of feelings I had as an adolescent and think it may resonate with others. It also touches on racism in ways I haven’t seen before especially from this time period.
