Very good blend of witchcraft and Victorian marriage market nonsense. I did find the emotional tone weird. Some serious themes are introduced but very lightheartedly handled.
The writing in this book felt very juvenile - I'd rec this for a very young YA, close to middle grade. The special illustrated edition I got from the library was stunningly pretty and had gorgeous illustrations, so I was willing to forgive a certain level of hard-to-suspend-disbelief in the plot. It wasn't as much about becoming an herbwitch's apprentice as I expected, though. More of a Cinderella story with a magical MC and a setting with heavy Bridgerton vibes.

This book has such nostalgic vibes for me. It reminded me of my Shannon Hale, Gail Carson Levine era. What an absolute delight it was to be taken back to that.
Amarante was a charming character who learned and grew through the story. All her friends are so lovely (Tori being my favorite). ASH such a cinnamon roll gentleman and the romance was simply sweet as pie.
HOW did you make me root for mean girl at the end I have no idea but I can’t WAIT to read the next book.
This book does read a little mid grade, which I don’t think is bad at all! Just be prepared for a storyline that caters to a younger audience, but that can still be enjoyed by the adults who love fairytales.
It lost a star for me because there is some new term slang in the book which seemed out of place to me but that’s just a personal preference
