When I read the first quarter of this book I thought that in comparison to other debut novels, I’d give this one 4 stars but then the plot drew me in. Here we are now, giving this debut novel 5 stars despite the slow start. Keep reading, you won’t regret it!
Was this inspired by Barbie movies? The author says so and you will find some Easter eggs throughout the book. But this story also felt like a more magical and unsmutty Bridgerton.
I loved the characters and the character development and the development of character relationships. I enjoyed the friendships and the learning process of our main girl and the build up of you know what and the mystery and the potion making.
I will start the Herbwitch Princess soon and happily read anything that Ireen Chau publishes from now on (no pressure!).

it was all cozy fantasy then BAM violence! amarante is stronger and more patient than me that’s for sure. overall a very charming (haha) book!

reads like a more developed fairytale. super magical world and a pretty nice writing style. apparently the first novel the author ever wrote and she felt brave enough to publish it, which i applaud and i think she presented that info in a super sweet way. the illustrations in the book are also by the author, and they're absolutely beautiful! loved the variety of characters, personal favourites would be amarante, ash, and olivia. really liked the romance between amarante and ash which sort of surprised me, but they were truly sweet. really liked the magic system too. reading this felt like watching a ghibli movie and a barbie movie combined into one. didn't like some predictable aspects of the plot, but it didn't bother me too much, especially in a debut novel.
