Not quite as tightly put together as Tessa’s later books but fun nonetheless.

I just enjoy all of Tessa Dare’s stories. This novel introduces us to Amelia, a wallflower who is nearing spinsterhood and Spencer, a Duke who loves horses and is indescribably bad at expressing his feelings.
There’s also an amusing array of side characters (who I’m hoping have their own books!).
This one does deal with some subjects which may be triggering.

I really enjoyed Amelia as a lead; she is intelligent, kind (to a fault), loyal, and seems funny as hell. I really appreciate that Dare had created a characters and romance of opposites that felt new despite it following some of the traditional romance tropes. The characters are all really fleshed out despite being dropped into the middle of action without much exposition which I think is really the mark of a very skilled writer.

I did find myself a touch bothered by some of the B plot stories (hence the 4 stars instead of 5), but mentioning those in too much detail would be spoilers!

All in all, this was another excellent romance from Tessa Dare and I’m looking forward to continuing the series!

Just what I wanted from this story. Executed every trope to perfection and the conflicts throughout the story felt genuine and realistic—apart from the rushed marriage of course. I liked and sympathized with both main characters and look forward to the other books in the series.

This book is 12 years old and it shows. I really enjoy Tessa Dare's books but haven't read too many of her early works. This one is mostly ok. I liked the main romance between the hero and heroine and on one hand I liked that Spencer's reasons for wanting to own the horse were important but not earth shatteringly so. I also appreciated that he realized that himself and was ready to move on.

My biggest problem with this book was Claudia and the handling of her story. While I appreciate that Spencer and Amelia are going to support her and help her in whatever way possible I also thought that they needed to be angrier on her behalf.
