I loved Elise Bryant’s debut novel, Happily Ever Afters, which gave us readers an introduction to Lenore— Tessa’s seemingly effortlessly stylish and cool friend at Chrysalis. I’m pretty sure after I finished H.E.A. I wrote how I wanted to read Lenore’s story. Here in One True Loves I’ve continued to enjoy Elise Bryant’s writing and the characters she creates.
My main complaint from One True Loves is that I wish it was longer!

I love this book as much as I love Elise Bryant's other books. I love how she talks about universities and how to deal with the pressure of choosing a university with black parents. As a black kid soon to be choosing a university this really helps me think about my future.

The racism is mostly implied in how boys treat Lenore. It primarily appears as colorism.mmccombs's review

This was really really sweet! Cruises kind of gross me out as a general rule but this somehow made a germ incubator on the sea incredibly romantic. It was also a perfect getaway novel, if I can’t vacation its nice to at least spend time in romantic European destinations in a book. I loved Lenore and how this tackled family pressure, mental health, and asking to be heard and to listen. I felt like this could have avoided the third-act breakup plot point, but all in all I thought this was a delight!

I received an e-arc of One True Loves by Elise Bryant from Harper Collins Canada via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'd like to begin by saying that I enjoyed One True Loves much more than Happily Ever Afters. I had a lot of trouble connecting with the MC in Happily Ever Afters (the whole scheming to get with someone taken is not something I enjoy reading and those HP references were way too much in my opinion) - but in this companion novel, I really enjoyed the character of Lenore, who we had met in the first book as well. I found Lenore to be a character that was much more likeable and I think that many YA teen readers will also connect with her as she tries to figure out what her life after high school plans are while also balancing meeting her parents' high expectations. The romance between Lenore and Alex was actually very sweet. I love that for a second, you think that it's going to be a fake dating scenario, but Lenore quickly shoots that plan down. It felt like it was playfully making fun of all those romance tropes we love yet also playing right into it. And I absolutely love that this was set on an European cruise. Definitely summer vacation dreams with all the places that the characters in this novel travelled to on their trip. Elise Bryant is a YA contemporary romance novel writer that I will be looking forward to reading more of.

Thanks to NetGalley and HarpreCollins for an advanced copy of this to review! I really enjoyed Happily Ever Afters when I read it last year, and a romance was just what I needed! Honestly, I almost think I enjoyed this one even more. Full of adventure and romance, it's sure to be a great escape when it comes out in January.
One of the things I really liked about this one was Lenore's journey. Her parents believe that because she's Black, she has to have her future 100% figured out before she goes to college. Which comes from their own past experiences. But 18 is such a young age to have that all figured out! I loved the way Lenore and Alex interacted, they really brought out the best in each other. Not only were they falling for each other, they were figuring out where they wanted their futures to go. Yes, they fall victim to some of the traditional romance tropes, but overall, they were lovely as a couple.
Outside of the romance, there's also some good discussion about mental health, especially as it intersects with parental expectations. Lenore's brother struggles with panic attacks, partly because of the pressures he put on himself. Normalizing having these conversations is so important, and I'm glad they were included in this story.
You can see Bryant's writing grow in this book. I honestly can't wait to see what she does next. Her love stories aren't afraid to go where they need to in order to tell the story.
