This is a great debut for a new series. If you want to read something other than your typical fantasy I wholly recommend this one.
Following 3 vikings, who don't know each other but whose actions impact everyone, the author acts this put with historical context.
Part intrigue and scheming for the throne, part religious groups at war, this is all adventure.
There are some mature themes, may be best reviewed before giving it to extremely young YA readers. But well written and nothing is in the book simply for shock value.
