Ok, they're kids' books but they're full of Norse mythology with a sprinkling of sass so I like them

Original review 2/29/24:

Annabeth smiled. "I don't know the ocean very well, but my boyfriend does. I think it's time you met Percy.
Yes please I also want (need) to meet Percy.

I love progressive (and progressive leaning) authors. There’s just something comforting about reading a book with so much representation; from hard of hearing or deaf characters, to at least one genderfluid character, practicing Muslim characters who take the time for their prayers (and not just the “token different” character), a bisexual atheist, a free black soldier from the civil war. Rick really just gets better and better. I love seeing these super tough people support each other whether it’s grieving the loss of a parent, struggling to reconcile with an entire childhood of mistreatment by shitty parents and not feeling defined by it, sharing self doubt and feelings of failure and having your entire team back you up even if you did make a mistake. It’s so very human. Basic humanity. How crazy is it that I’m all emotional over a book written for like 12 year olds because this wonderful author wants kids (and anyone else reading) to know IT IS ALL OKAY AND YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

And honestly, all of that is so much more important than any adventure we take in this book. Which to be fair is quite a bit. Swords who must shed blood before being sheathed, wights, more giants, MORE giants, Loki, etc etc. But really, Percy Jackson will always be my most favorite book boyfriend to ever exist, but damn if Magnus Chase and company aren’t competing for the better series.

Reread ending: 6/25/25

Shit's going down with the Norse gods. Cousin Annabeth tells Magnus shit's going down with the Greek/Roman gods. Not a good time to be a minor deity.

I love Magnus. I love Alex. I love them together and want, no NEED, more of them.

Brain's too frazzled from this week to add anything of substance just want to say that this series is still one of Riordan's best and all of these characters kick ass. kthxbye.
