So sweet. So funny. So real. Kenwood wrote Natalie to be such a charming narrator, and I appreciate a YA story from the perspective of a kid who is kind of anxious and shy and hang out with her parents. Idk how to explain why that feels so different and significant but I liked it! A lot!

Sweet romance based in Australia, I enjoyed it on audio

I just loved this one. Natalie was refreshingly blunt and painfully insecure. I loved her relationship with Lucy, Zach, and Alex. I also loved that it was set in Melbourne.

Here’s a comment I’ve never made about a book before: I don’t understand the title. It was never mentioned and no one ever says anything or implies anything like it anywhere in the book. So, there’s that.

However, I liked this book for many reasons. First, I was pleasantly surprised to find it set in Australia! That was cool and made me be constantly on the lookout for differences down under - of which there were plenty. Like New Years in the summer and Tim Tams and Nido (which is milk powder). The way they refer to schools and uni and “bathers,” too. Very cool.

overall thoughts: i really liked this book! i read it for my online book club that i joined this year, and wasn’t really expecting to enjoy it, as it looked like such a predictable romance, but to my surprise, it was really good! there wasn’t really any plot to speak of, but i loved the way it relied on character.

what i liked: the characters were really good. they were all fleshed out, and had both strong traits and flaws. the author did really well at creating three dimension characters and the way they interacted felt organic and genuine. i also liked the way natalie’s insecurities were written. they were so authentic and real. all the situations were pretty wacky but made sense in general.

what i didn’t like: to be honest, i didn’t really feel the natalie/alex romance. they honestly just seemed like good friends? even at the end of the book, he seemed like another member of the group, not natalie’s boyfriend.

Honestly my least favourite of Nina Kenwood’s books. I get that it is YA, but the characters felt a bit underdeveloped (the than the main character I wasn’t invested in anyone), the romance felt unbelievable, and nothing much happened. A quick easy read but not one I would necessarily pick up again. One positive is that I think Nina encapsulates well the thought processes of a teenage girl - those parts felt relatable.
