This was the last book left unread from my Yuletide presents, so I’m glad to have gotten around to it within a reasonable timeframe. I definitely liked the diary format, but it does kind of suffer in comparison to ‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾’ by Sue Townsend (which I personally prefer and find more relatable). I think that this is possibly just one of those situations where I prefer the compressed storytelling of the film adaptation, and found the book a bit repetitive and drawn out in places.

It was alternately relatable and repulsive. She caused so many of her own problems and some of it was just a little too outlandish. I also couldn't figure out why Mark Darcy was into her at all and then totally frustrated with how she ignored him for so long. Daniel Cleaver occupied far too much of the book. It was also dated enough that I don't see it being even a fraction as timeless as Austen.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but I think the actors did serve to make some of the characters less annoying. However, I always love a pride and prejudice retelling. I particularly like how they dealt with the Lydia issue, as it made a lot of sense and I feel like modern retellings often flounder when trying to come up with something convincing for that plot point
