Yes, this is very much ‘of a time’, but regardless, I really enjoyed reading this it was funny, relatable and lighthearted, slightly different from the film which is good because I’ve seen that a lot 😅
Overall a really fun book and written in a way that’s super quick to speed through.

Cute book, interesting what's different from the movie. Little depressing for the title character to think she's fat when she's about 25 pounds lighter than me, though...

I wanted something lighter to read and this was perfect for it! The pacing was good, kept me invested and I had a good laugh along the way.
The diary format breaking up the novel segments was interesting and I enjoyed Bridget’s inner monologue, her experiences had me feeling the secondhand embarrassment and sympathy for her along the way.
I think the main to keep in mind with this book (and the sequels no doubt) is that of course being a 90s series certain aspects will have aged a little poorly (Eg what Bridget perceives as being ‘fat’ is far from it, however beauty standards were harsher to what they are today) I thought Bridget may turn into a chimney by the end of the book the way she was smoking.
Will continue with this series.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I found Bridget very annoying though (as I think you are supposed to). It really frustrated me that she kept insisting that she needed to lose weight - she was only in her 120's-130's lbs which is not fat AT ALL. While she did diet all the time, she did not describe herself exercising a lot. So, if she really cared about losing the weight, I feel like she would have done more. If this is the case, her compulsion to lose weight and to think she is fat could be a reflection of society and societal pressure to meet a certain beauty standard. Also, I was not overly fond of the diary-style format. The sentence fragments were a nightmare, and I got bored reading her daily descriptions of the food she ate, what she smoked and drank. It was realistic for a diary, it was just so tedious to read. I also did not like this format because it made Bridget seem very one dimensional and shallow. In a diary, you write about the extremes of your life - your hopes, dreams, fears, longings. but this does not give a well-rounded picture of who a person is. I'm sure Bridget is more than how she appears (boy-crazy, disorganized, and flaky).
