I tried to read this but didn't get past 22 pages. This is not a girl I would be friends with. Far too shallow.

Bridget Jones was really funny and entertaining and a breeze in 1998. Everyone loved her and that she was far from perfect. She was portrayed as a pioneer and a rolemodel for women in their 30s. And though Helen Fielding created an amazing role model 1998 she hasn't aged well.

Bridget calls herself feminist but everything she does, she does to impress men. She believe she's fat when she weighs 60 kg, even though she probably is completely average maybe even slim. It's more or less a novel written in the form of a diary and it's all about dieting, impressing men, worrying about men and feeling guilty for not living up to her extremely unrealistic expectations.

I giggled sometimes, but mostly I just wanted Bridget to let go of her dieting, all worries about men and just serve her friends Shepherd's Pie and ale when she invites them.

i remember loving these books before and i know i read them at least two or three times, though it's been a while (the first two, i never read mad about the boy bc i was like that plot is bullshit, but since this was disappointing, i think i could go ahead and read it since i won't be rereading the series again)

like....i do think a lot of humor books just kind of miss the mark and this is definitely a case of the movies being way better. and i don't even think it's so much that it was written in the 90s and some of it feels dated/offensive, there just....weren't a lot of funny moments

and her relationship with mark has NO development whatsoever? (though the last couple months in the book were better bc of him tbh) she just suddenly likes him even though they haven't actually interacted a whole lot, and they don't even go on that date he asked her on, so like everything he does at the end is very lovely but it's also like you don't really know her that well? maybe the second book is better in that regard, we'll see. whereas the movie throws them together a lot more so even though for a lot of the movie she's like "i hate this dude" it's still more believable that she falls for him because he's been a constant presence, unlike here

and listen, maybe this is all bc of when it was written and i remembered going in how she writes her weight and calories and all that in all her diary entries (which, my god, how unhelpful is it to weigh yourself EVERY day) so like, ya she's obsessive, and anyone of any body type can struggle with their body image, that's very important to recognize. but godddd it was just kind of unbearable to me like so much of the story centers around it and i guess it wouldn't be any better if she were actually fat bc fat characters' storylines constantly revolve around their weight (see the show this is us for at least the first couple seasons lmao) but i'm just like oh my god this woman is always under 130 lbs and again, anyone can have these feelings especially in the society we live in but. it's still annoying to read 270 pages of it

also i think writing a book in diary entries can absolutely work though i think it'd be preferable to maybe have them interspersed with like, actual story, but there really was so little plot, again compared to the movie. i will say reading some of the more negative reviews that i think people are a little harsh about bridget, but idk, i tend to sympathize with protagonists unless they're like, actual villains. like, she is self centered and irresponsible - again, less so in the movie i think - but she's not the devil incarnate like some of y'all are acting

i've been reading the confessions of a shopaholic books which, the first few are from around the same time as these books, and have felt some similarities with an irresponsible protagonist who keeps planning to change, but never does - which like, hey, i relate lmao - and the love interest who loves her anyway. i think shopaholic has a character who is a little more charming and more of an actual plot, so i think people might sympathize with bridget more if you did see her at least sometimes think of things that aren't so shallow. which like, again, some of y'all.....it is okay for someone to care about things that you think are silly, like wanting a boyfriend or being invited to parties or whatever, just as long as they care about other things too. anyway, for me, it's really not that i hate bridget, because while she's somewhat different in the films, she does still have some of those same core traits and i don't think she's a truly awful person, i just think the story she was written into here falls flat

I understand why it is iconic but whew. I wish I wasn't imagining Mark Darcy as Colin Firth he should be hotter than that
