I couldn’t get into it. I’m typically a fast reader and couldn’t get past page 30 in 5 days. I wasn’t enjoying it!!

So she's no longer a cop but has access to every bit of the investigation, even though she's a potential suspect? *sigh* I'm at 70% and it's a full-on slog at this point. I think a good editor could have tightened up the story and made the plot holes less annoying/apparent plus reduced the repetition. Struggling to not add to my DNF and move on.

ETA: I did finish and was unimpressed.

This was one of my free Amazon Reads books from a few months ago, and I wanted a change of pace to what I had been reading.

I found it so hard to stay focused on what was going on, but I feel like it was more of a me thing, than the book (I had just finished 32 or 33 books in 31 days and was feeling burnt out on reading but didn't want to lose my reading streak on my Kindle.)

The story was interesting, Stepmom goes missing when the FMC was a teenager, and somehow her body is found. Come to find out, that wasn't the only thing they found and it starts getting deeper and deeper.

Behold! The last book I read in 2024…finally…and then I can start my reviews of 2025😂😂 This story was an Amazon Prime First Reads selection, and I really liked it! It gave me a similar vibe to Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth. Three sisters come together at their childhood home in the grips of personal challenges and a very disturbing mystery literally unearthed in the woods on their property. I liked the dynamic of the sisters with each other; the eldest two have a darker set of secrets in their shared history that heavily contributes to the story. I believe the book is set up to start this as a series, and I will definitely seek out the next installment.

The setting has all the feels of small-town life, where it seems everyone is connected in some manner and eyes are on you everywhere, at anytime. I think the author even has something posted that shows some of the actual areas mentioned in the novel!

A very satisfying crime fiction thriller with which to end the year!
