“LA AMAPOLA ROJA

Es gran cosa
no tener
una mente. Sentimientos:
oh, sí tengo de esos;
me gobiernan. Hice
Acaso
se permitieron
abrirse una vez, ustedes que nunca
se abrirían de nuevo? Porque en realidad
ahora estoy hablando
como lo hacen ustedes. Yo hablo
porque estoy destruida”.

I might be in the minority on this one, but I can't really connect with Louise Gluck. There were moments that I liked, but in the end, I didn't really care. And I wanted to care so much, because I've heard so many good things about her and about this collection in particular! But to me it seemed judgmental and samey, too abstract for my liking. Sorry.

"the happy heart/
wanders the garden like a falling leaf, a figure for/
the part, not the whole."

"why/
do you treasure your voice/
when to be one thing/
is to be next to nothing?"

"or to show me you are not the light I called to/
but the blackness behind it."

"but why/
start anything so close to the end?"
