Oh dear. On one hand I loved the world-building, on the other the characters just didn't work for me this time around. The antagonists were suitably evil and nasty (as they should be) but even the protagonists that we're meant to be rooting for were often unlikable (did not like Dustfinger for about 98% of the whole book, Fadrid constantly being jealous of Roxane, Roxane's dislike of Fadrid). Sadly by the time I got to the big death at the end of the book I didn't care that much and was just glad that I'd finally finished it.

wtf bro😭 this book broke my heart and then ripped it completely into pieces just a few pages later😭 you better make it right again in the next book cornelia

but seriously, this book is incredible and so so much better than the first one! The first book didn’t quite catch me and it dragged a little bit, but this time I was immersed in the story and it felt like I was right there in the book with the characters, taking every step and fighting every battle with them. And now as I have finished the book it leaves me kinda empty, longing to go back again and walk side by side with all the characters I’ve grown to love.

Really good, parts of it were slow but the writing is beautiful and the storyline interesting. I will be reading the final book in the trilogy at some point.

These characters are so complexly flawed that I became so angry with them, a feeling that bled over into my opinion of the book, despite acknowledging that this is the outcome of extremely creative writing. I preferred the story in the ink world compared to the reverse in the first book. Mo remains my favorite character.

Liked it a lot as a kid, liked it less as I got older. It’s still okay

I love the inkworld it makes me feel nostalgic and enjoyed reading this alot as a teenager. It is dark for a middle grade as there is death and threats. There us a lot of exploring the world, new characters, and how everyone fits into the picture.
But because of that it does feel slow paced for how big the book is. There are alot of moments which are tense and emotional. The climax of the story pulls all the plans together and the tension was high even on a re-read.
I enjoy Meggie etc getting to go into Inkheart world and am delighted we get to see Dustfinger in his element but I remember feeling sadder with this book then the cosier feel of the first and of the three I think it is my least favourite but I still had a great time in this world. I enjoy Rosenquartz and The Black Prince. The Piper is a great addition to the villains of the story and the magical elements like the soot made of water on fire was cool.
